The Private Wireless Networks Handbook explained.

People have been asking about the Private Wireless networks Handbook and why I wrote it. To be honest, I feel people are misunderstanding the use cases for private wireless networks.

We all know that the carriers deploy on mass and need more bandwidth to deliver more throughput. That should be obvious to most people in the industry.

I believe we understand that DAS systems are going to remain at larger venues, like sports arenas and airports. That makes sense. It’s not going anywhere. It will continue to be upgraded.

The indoor or campus designs of the network will remain almost the same. It could be a DAS setup or small cells or a few macro sites strategically placed around the coverage area.

So why do people misunderstand private wireless networks? Let me count the ways.

For one, the use cases are not “one-size-fits-all”! We have to understand that working with these customers they have a specific use case for their business. It’s all about getting to know what the customer wants. You can tell when they are not sure because they usually ask for the cost and then have you design it only to walk away with your design. These days are fading as companies want to pay to do a design. Sure, it can be applied towards the project, but if the customer takes it to create their RFP, that’s not fair, is it? Trust me, this happens all the time.

Second, the idea of a private wireless network should be to solve a problem for the business. It should be as specific to the business as possible. Some businesses want to monitor things, devices, meters, alarms, and so on. Others want to expand their high-speed coverage or have a secure network for their workers and visitors to use. They may want to monitor the data over the network if they deal with financials. They may even want emergency coverage in their facilities. The use cases vary.

Third, it doesn’t have to be a 4F or 5G network. That’s one of the biggest misconceptions. It could be any number of technologies. Most people have Wi-Fi today, chances are that’s all they need. They may be using LoRaWAN or Sigfox, that may fit their use case. Finally, we have RFID and BLE models. We don’t need to narrow in on P5G or PLTE, do we?

Also, the new technologies like PLTE and P5G are very expensive, especially when you put the solutions next to a carrier grade network. This could be a show stopper for many mid to small size businesses.
