Airline Private Wireless Use Cases

One of the main use cases I worked on in 2022 and 2023 was for the airlines. They need to solve some issues to increase efficiency. Not necessarily here in the US, but abroad these talent pools for the airlines are waning. People don’t get paid what they used to and quite honestly, COVID hurt this industry almost as much as it destroyed the restaurant and live-entertainment industries. They needed help and they are thinking outside the box to find solutions.

  1. Maintenance using sensors and video is the key thing here. They don’t rely on a carrier’s network on the plane, so they’re looking at a very secure wide area network in the airport. While on the plane they can monitor alarms, it’s when it lands that they want to see all the information as soon as possible. I know they want to have a wide area network so that when the plane lands it connects and immediately sends all the data, including alarms, back to a central point where it can be examined and evaluated as soon as the plane lands and connects. It reduces inspection time and if there is a problem, they can repair it immediately. Also, an expert in one location can make the determination instead of having a team at each airport.
  2. Repairs using live video at the airport. The way we looked at this was to have a remote team examine the airplane maintenance logs then evaluate the problem, using video on the local tech we had experts back in a remote location determine what should be done next. This reduces errors and allows the experts to be in one location while the onsite staff do the repairs. Remote support with experts available 24/7. It makes sense to have support available in real time, right?
  3. Walk traffic monitoring using video is another key use in an airport. Congestion is a real problem, but don’t think I mean on the roads outside. We want to monitor the flow of people inside the airport as well. If we see a huge number of people around certain areas, we need to be alerted that it could be a problem. Also, if there is a problem, security can be parted quickly. If there is a safety breach, security can see it in real time. Video is already used all across airports, now they can add more cameras without running wires and still being on a secure network. Remember they always want to keep the public Wi-Fi network separated from the internal network, at all costs.
  4. Broadband access on the plane is another use case. This doesn’t need much explanation. It’s already being tested and evaluated. This is a tough market to break into and heavily regulated.
  5. Video on planes is another use case I think they could consider. Let’s face it, they often have problems or medical emergencies on planes and yet they rarely have cameras on the plane reporting back to anyone. I think this is a security issue and should be implemented right away.
  6. Security inside the plane, terminal, and across the campus. This could be for video, the obvious thing, or with secure communication for employees, security, and so on. Broadband data with added security.
