Starlink Sending Direct Text Messages!


SpaceX has been testing their space cell network. This is something AT&T could have used yesterday, but Starlink’s agreement is with T-Mobile.

They, like most carriers today, would like to have a direct to device connection when the terrestrial network is not available. It is a great backup for emergencies or just to stay in touch when out of coverage. Maybe even tracking.

While the texting is cool, I understand that for IOT we now have a new way to connect, almost anywhere there’s Starlink coverage. This will put a dent into the VSAT business because LEO should be way easier to connect to and you won’t have to align those larger dishes.

Starlink is doing it with their phased array antennas on the birds and don’t forget the software. They also can talk satellite to satellite eliminating unnecessary delays by transmitting back to Earth.

Oh, I brought up T-Mobile because I live in the US, but the deals are rolling in worldwide. They are now inking deals with Rogers (Canada), Optun (Australia), One New Zealand, KDDI (Japan), Salt (Switzerland), and Entel (Chile and Peru).

Eventually I see larger IOT networks on trains, ships, wind farms, oil rigs, and pipelines relying on this constellation for future connections.
