It’s important that workers, whether you’re a one-person show or running a larger company, that you can define the work that you do and set expectations. If you’re the customer or the contractor, you want to know what to expect when the project is complete. You also want to know how and when payment will be handled. The job, project, or tasks should be laid out clearly. That’s not always easy to do at the beginning of a project if you’ve never done it before, but you have to try. It makes sense.

Did you think about milestones? Maybe you need to get paid throughout the project. Do you think you can write it alone? I would say not. After all, what is in a SOW? Is it just the job at hand or will there be legal terms, payment terms, a delivery schedule, ownership of an app or software clearly defined, and who knows what else? It’s best to lay it all out ahead of time to avoid problems at the end of the project. It happens all too often. We need something binding like a SOW that will be attached to the contract, or the contract will be an attachment to the SOW. Did you really think it through? Let’s face it, 2 things have to happen:

The Customer must sign off on the work to pay you.
Complete the work properly to get paid.
